UCSF-based Primary Care Residency Program

The UCSF Primary Care General Internal Medicine Residency (UCPC) is a three-year program designed to train leaders in General Internal Medicine.

The UCPC Program was created in 1974 and continues to be a trailblazer in primary care internal medicine training. UCPC residents graduates are socially responsible, inquisitive internists, and emerge as future leaders in all areas of General Internal Medicine. Our graduates serve as leaders in clinical care, medical education, health services research, public health (both for local and national organizations), quality improvement and health delivery innovation. Clinically, our graduates are based in academic health centers, community-based practices and in community health networks (including the Indian Health Service) caring for underserved populations.

Spending more than half of their PGY2/PGY3 time in the ambulatory setting, residents receive rigorous, individualized general medicine training and a comprehensive didactic curriculum that provides a foundation in clinical medicine, health systems and practice improvement. Program Directors meet monthly with residents to develop an individual curriculum based on emerging learning goals.  The UCPC Residency’s academic and clinical home is within the UCSF Division of General Medicine at the Mount Zion Campus. Residents see a diverse group of patients in an integrated resident-faculty practice, which is a certified Patient-Centered Medical Home. The UCSF Division of General Internal Medicine at Mount Zion consists of more than 80 faculty -- many of whom are graduates of our program – and from whom residents receive extensive, personalized teaching and mentoring. Residents are provided time and individual mentorship for scholarly research which they disseminate at local and national meetings.
 
The primary care residency is fully and seamlessly integrated with the larger Department of Medicine Residency Program at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), which includes the diversity of inpatient training in a 3-hospital system. Thus, the UCSF Primary Care General Internal Medicine Residency combines intensive in-hospital training with structured extensive training in ambulatory medicine with a diversity of patients. Primary care residents and the general internal medicine faculty participate in all Department of Medicine teaching and service activities.
