Over the past 30 years, Dr. Stephen J. McPhee has been a dedicated educator, clinician and researcher in the Division of General Internal Medicine and the primary care residency program. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the Division of General Internal Medicine and the primary care training program, the Division has elected to establish the Stephen J. McPhee, MD Endowed Chair at UCSF.

A permanent endowment in Dr. McPhee’s name will not only be a lasting tribute to Dr. McPhee, but will also provide important resources to support the career of a faculty member in the Division of General Internal Medicine. The inaugural holder of the McPhee Chair is Tung Nguyen, MD, who shares Dr. McPhee's incredible dedication to delivering the highest quality of care to patients, conducting meaningful research to improve health of populations and maintaining a passionate commitment to providing the best training for our residents.

Dr. Nguyen is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of General Internal Medicine. He completed his residency in primary care internal medicine at UCSF and received health services research training at Stanford University and UCSF. Dr. Nguyen's research focuses on addressing health disparities among minority populations, particularly Asian American communities, through community involvement in research and training. Currently, he serves as the Director of the UCSF Vietnamese Community Health Promotion Project. Dr. Nguyen is a close collaborator of Dr. McPhee, so it is fitting that he is the first appointee to the McPhee Chair.
